About the Immersion Scholarships Initiative

The South Australian Government’s ‘Languages in Schools’ initiative contains a suite of measures to reinvigorate the study of languages in schools.

As part of this initiative, the Minister for Education is offering three scholarships to language teachers in South Australia for language immersion experiences within Australia or overseas. One of these three scholarships will be available to teachers in each education sector:

  • One scholarship for a teacher in a Catholic Education School
  • One scholarship for a teacher in a Department for Education School
  • One scholarship for a teacher in an Independent School

The immersion scholarship program for language teachers aims to improve language skills, proficiency, and intercultural understanding. Immersion scholarships are only available for languages that have a curriculum or framework in the Australian Curriculum.

Raphaelle Delaunay

SAFTA invites you to enter your students for the Year 7 Prize for French. The best Year 7 student from each nominating school will receive a prize at the SAFTA/Alliance Française Distribution des Prix on Wednesday 21 October. As in previous years, we are asking students to complete a small task in order to be eligible for the prize, on the principle of the Alliance Française Year 10, 11 and 12 tests, but aimed of course at Year 7 level.

The task is for students in your Year 7 French classes to write a brief letter about themselves, addressed to La Présidente de la SAFTA.

  • Maximum of 100 words

  • The letter is to be hand written and done during one or two French lessons.

(Spend no more than 1 hour in total on the task)

  • Students can reference classroom materials such as dictionaries, vocab posters

and their exercise books, but NO COMPUTER ASSISTANCE, please.

  • Minimal teacher assistance please.

  • The content of the letter is to be based on the students’ own experience in the

language, eg a description of themselves, their interests (sports, food, friends, family etc).

Select the best 5 letters from your class and forward them to SAFTA by Wednesday, 23rd SEPTEMBER. Address: SAFTA, c/- Catherine Skene, Glen Osmond Primary School, 5 Fisher St Myrtle Bank 5064. Please make sure your entries reach us by this date, as the timeline is fairly tight.

SAFTA will award a prize to the student judged the best in each participating school. Students’ work will not be compared between schools. Results will reach you at the start of Term 4 and will include invitations for you and your students to attend the Distribution des Prix.

We hope you will take this opportunity to recognize the achievements of your students at the end of their primary years of French, or, for those in a secondary setting, to recognize the achievements of your students as they begin their French studies.

    Catherine Skene Présidente
et la Comité de la SAFTA

SAFTA is again offering our Grand concours de poésie récitée for primary students.  However, we have made a few adaptions, which we hope will make your lives simpler and enable you to engage your students whether they are learning from home or school.

Along with the poems in written form, we include audio recordings for you to share with your students.  This year, we are not offering a group poem for year 6-7.

Bilingual students are welcome to enter the competition at their age level, or an older category.  We ask you to indicate on the registration form whether a student is bilingual, or is part of a bilingual program.  They will be judged separately from L2 students.

All attachments are provided as word documents and PDFs, to allow you to cut and paste to suit your needs and to save you from having to print and scan.

To enable you to send us your entries digitally, we suggest you use the platform WeTransfer.  It is very simple and allows you to send up to 2 GB for free.  Send entries digitally via WeTransfer to laureline.martin88@schools.sa.edu .However, if you prefer to send your recordings on a USB, Marcia McLachlan is collecting entries at her school.
