SAFTA – COUPE DE PETANQUE 2021 – REPORT
The Coupe de Pétanque took place on Thursday March 25, once again at the Unley Park Sports Club. After the disappointment of last year’s cancellation, it was great to be able to run the event without any real restrictions, although Covid requirements were met, and packaged sweet and savoury treats for the students replaced the normal barbecue.
There were 9 Primary teams from Burnside, St Peters, Seymour, Trinity Gawler River and Mercedes, and only 4 Secondary teams, from Seaview, St Aloysius and St Peters. About 45 students took part overall, and they were supported by about 40 parents and teachers. Although numbers were down from the 2019 and 2018 events, there were enough students/teams to make for a viable competition.
John and Mark, from Unley Park Sports Club, were on hand to give assistance and guide the students, and they did an excellent job. They are willing to go out to the schools and give pétanque lessons/demonstrations for a modest fee, and a couple of the schools at the event had already benefited from their instruction. Please see the attached flyer.
The competition was played out in very good spirits, and students clearly had a great time.
Primary semi-finalists were Burnside, Trinity, St Peters and Mercedes. In the Grand Final, Mercedes outlasted Trinity, and took home the trophy. In the Secondary competition, Seaview were too strong for St Peters in the Grand Final.
Thanks are due to a number of people, firstly the Unley Park Sports Club, whose hospitality was again first class. There were several committee members at the event, apart from those involved with students, and they ensured that things went very smoothly. Former committee stalwart Alan Cleggett was also there and gave valuable assistance with the record keeping. As ever, a warm vote of thanks must go to the teachers of the students who firstly inspired their charges to come out and play, and then made certain the games were played efficiently, and in an excellent spirit. They are integral to the success of the evening.
The current committee would also like to thank Andrew for his ongoing support of this event. Andrew continues to collect registrations and create the draw prior to the tournament and very ably keep score on the evening. We appreciate Andrew’s commitment.
